The historic preservation indicator tracks the number of sites in the City of Champaign, the City of Urbana, the Village of Mahomet, the Village of Rantoul, and Champaign County that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and the year of their listing. The number of sites or properties in an area listed on the National Historic Register is indicative both of the architectural resources and heritage of the area and of the area residents’ level of motivation to nominate sites to be listed.
The number of sites listed on the National Historic Register has increased in all five measured areas since the first property in Champaign County was listed in 1968. Of the four non-cumulative areas, the City of Champaign and the City of Urbana each have 29 sites. The most recent additions are the Downtown Urbana Historic District in 2019, the Champaign Downtown Commercial District in 2020, and the Joseph W. Royer and Ella Danely Cottage in Urbana in 2022. The Village of Mahomet and Village of Rantoul currently each have one listed site, added in 1994 and 2006, respectively.
