Active Transportation Infrastructure

This indicator measures the amount of active transportation infrastructure (e.g., bike routes, bike lanes, and other forms of bike infrastructure; sidewalks) in miles in the Champaign-Urbana-Savoy urbanized area. The amount of active transportation infrastructure in the community, in miles, provides additional information about residents’ ability to get around the community without needing a car, and, to some degree, how much active transportation is valued and prioritized in the community.

The total mileage of bicycle facilities (“bicycle facilities” includes the following forms of bike infrastructure: shared-use paths, bike paths, bike lanes, shared lane markings (i.e. sharrows), shared bike/parking lanes, and bike routes) has significantly increased since 2010.

Sidewalk mileage in the urbanized area has increased slightly from 2015 to 2019. Between 2019 and 2020, changes were made to the sidewalk GIS layer that reduced the total sidewalk mileage, but the mileage increased again from 2020 to 2021. Besides the amount of sidewalks in the community, the accessibility of pedestrian facilities is also important for people with disabilities. The CUUATS Sidewalk Explorer provides information about the compliance of sidewalks with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as the compliance of curb ramps, marked crosswalks, and pedestrian signals.

This data is collected and released in several CCRPC/CUUATS documents: the annual Long Range Transportation Plan Report Cards, released annually; the Champaign County Greenways & Trails Plan; and the Sidewalk Network Inventory and Assessment for the Champaign Urbana Urbanized Area.
